About
Mr. Ogho Obakponovwe is an experienced consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon with a specialisation in hip and knee surgery, as well as primary and complex joint replacements. He also offers expertise in arthroscopic (keyhole) procedures and has a strong interest in sports injuries, providing tailored care to individuals with active lifestyles.
After graduating from the University of Leicester Medical School in 2005, Mr. Obakponovwe completed his foundation training before moving to the Yorkshire School of Surgery at Leeds General Infirmary in 2007, where he gained invaluable experience in complex trauma and orthopaedic care under the guidance of Professor PV. Giannoudis. During his time at Leeds, he also pursued a postgraduate degree in clinical research, earning a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) in 2015.
His specialist training continued at the Royal London Hospital Orthopaedic rotation, where he developed further expertise, and he was added to the specialist register in 2019. Mr. Obakponovwe then undertook two fellowships in Hip & Knee Arthroplasty at Royal Bournemouth Hospital, one of the UK’s busiest centres for joint replacements. Under the mentorship of Professors Rob Middleton and Adrian Harvey, he gained extensive experience in complex, revision, and robotic joint replacements.
In 2020, Mr. Obakponovwe was appointed as a consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester, where he now specialises in hip, knee, sports, and trauma surgery. His dedication to advancing patient care is evident through his expertise in the following areas:

Personal interests
Mr. Obakponovwe is married with two sons and is deeply passionate about sports. He is a two-time London heavyweight amateur boxing champion and stays actively involved with grassroots boxing clubs. He also played football during medical school and currently plays masters football for the British Medical Football team. An advocate for keeping fit, he enjoys short-distance running, snowboarding, scuba diving (advanced open water), and kite surfing.
Outside of his professional and athletic commitments, Mr. Obakponovwe is an avid traveller, having visited over 45 countries and territories.
The Peter Claver Foundation
Mr Obakponovwe is a co-founder & chair of The Peter Claver Foundation, a healthcare charity committed to tackling health inequalities by promoting and supporting healthcare systems in developing countries, particularly in Delta state, Nigeria.

Mr Obakponovwe although retired from competition, still maintains ties with grassroots boxing . He serves as a medical adviser and practitioner for England Boxing.
Academic and Clinical Excellence
- Mr. Ogho Obakponovwe is an Honorary Fellow of Orthopaedic Research Institute, ORI, Bournemouth University. He has a postgraduate degree in Orthopaedic Clinical Research; with his clinical trial and writing of a dissertation on managing periprosthetic and osteoporotic knee fractures.
- A prolific contributor to orthopaedic and trauma surgery. Mr Obakponovwe is a clinical surgical tutor, training the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons. He is extensively published in this field. His collaborative work is featured in leading medical journals and has presented groundbreaking research ideas at local and international venues such as the prestigious American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Congress.
- Mr. Obakponovwe is also dedicated to keeping updating clinical practice research, improving techniques as much as research findings and evidence manifest.
