I had tried chiroparcters, exercises, bizarre health supplements. Even if they were meant to make you feel better, maybe by placebo effect, nothing was working and I was getting worse. Walking more than 100m was really painful that increased exponentially. Even sleeping became painful, which makes no sense as there is no weight on your hip.
So I bit the bullet and booked to see a doctor at Spire Hospital in Portsmouth. My first bit of luck. I didn’t realise that the appointment with Dr. Obak was actually with the surgeon who would perform the operation. He did some physical mobility tests on me, sent me for an Xray 25metres away, and showed me the results. He was straight-forward and professional. We agreed on a hip replacement and I was booked in for 3 weeks time. All done in one 40 minute meeting. That’s organisation.
He explained that hip-replacements are his speciality. He does them most days and can do 7 in a week. That’s the guy I want.He can be assisted by robots and said he will do everything he can to get my leg lengths the same after the operation. This is vital as any difference can cause the other hip, or your knees, to suffer. Right, that all makes sense.
The operation was straight-forward. I went in on a Thursday and came out on the Friday afternoon. Amazing.
As you can read in the other comments, Dr Obak is exceptional. I have already recommended him to friend who has suffered for years, and he is booked in for hip-replacement in Decemeber.
I am two months after the operation now, and walk two miles most days. Painfree. I haven’t felt like this for years. And my blood pressure has dropped, maybe from the increased exercise, or maybe for not being in constant pain.
Do I still hate hospitals? Well, they are not my holiday destination. But if you have to go through one, The Spire at Cosham and Dr Obak, will make the experience as pleasant as it can be. And yes, he really is a heavy weight boxing champion, which again is amazing! But with my new hip I reckon I could take him…….

This man has changed my life. Very warm and approachable. I felt totally at ease with the prospect of the operation (THR) after meeting him and the op itself could not have gone any better. No one can keep up with me now.

Back in Dec 2024 I was suffering with Groin , Leg and Back pains and was given an appointment with Physio as opposed to seeing a doctor . I was sent for an XRay and the diagnosis was start of Arthritis , course of action , just learn to live with it. Early 2025 i saw a further Physio and was added to a list to see a consultant -waiting time 18-24 Months. It was then that i contacted the Spire and got an Appointment to see Mr Obak. Right from the first meeting Mr Obak displayed and interest in my situation, what i was hoping to achieve from the appointment. The first course of action was an xray, not laying down horizontally as through NHS but standing vertically . Within 10 minutes i was back in the consulting room with the xray on the computer screen , and Mr Obak showed me the xray of both hips and explained what the issue was with the Left Hip . It was not as suggested arthritis , but the Cartlidge had worn away and is was living with Bone on Bone scenario. There was no option for course of injection etc only course of action was Total Hip Replacement . Mr Obak talked me through the process and gave me information about the procedure and the process and advised what i should expect , pre and post operation and then into the recovery period. The procedure was subsequently booked in . Pre operation i was kept fully informed and the required visits to Spire undertaken . On the day of the procedure , Mr Obak was one of the First persons i saw on the day coming in to offer re assurance and to talk through the process ahead. Pre surgery in the operating theatre again Mt Obak was talking through what him and the team would be doing and how the process would go . Surgery was undertaken and went very well . Later that Day Mr Obak called into see me , advised that he had reviewed the Xrays and he was extremely pleased with how the operation had gone and was expected a full recovery . Post recovery went well and last week i met Mr Obak who undertook an inspection of the Hip and discussed with myself how i was feeling and how my recovery was going . The pain had gone straight after the operation and movement and flexibility returning as i work with the Spire Physio Team – Many Thanks to them. Throughout the whole process Mr Obak displayed Empathy, Reassurance, Professionalism and a genuine interest in my issues and ultimate solution and recovery to enable me to have a pain free Life . From my perspective couldn’t have asked for any more , made a major significant surgery process understandable and performed with extreme professionalism Thank You . Highly recommend Mr Obak

I needed a right hip operation and I choose Mr Obak (as he is known to everyone) at the Nuffield. The operation was a total success and I was able to resume my daily walks, which have been an important part of my daily life, and without the aid of crutches within 10 days after leaving hospital and cannot thank Mr Obak enough together with all the staff at the Nuffield.

This was my second knee replacement ,the first being a year ago .
I am delighted with the result and already can walk so much further without pain ( operation was on 19 th May so almost 7

Following a GP appointment and X-ray at Spire, which confirmed osteoarthritis in my right hip, I had a reassuring consultation with Mr Obak in March. Having seen how my sisters knee replacement went five months ago under his care I booked a private appointment (even though I am scared of the inevitable operation) but from the moment I stepped into the consulting room I felt totally at ease and in good hands. 2023 I had a knee replacement at St Richards. Mr Obakponovwe showed an understanding to my needs and explained the operation thoroughly. The after care he gave was amazing too. After 6 months things were fine but he felt he wanted to see me in another 6 months. Which I have just done. Swelling has gone done really well, the the flexibility in my knee is great. Very recently I had a total knee replacement, I’ve been lucky enough never to have had any major surgery and have always been very active up until the point my knee became so damaged it needed to be replaced. I was assigned to Mr Obakponovwe’s surgical list. What I like is that Mr Obakponovwe has a very informal style which I really appreciated, it put me at ease and meant I could ask questions about the procedure and prepare in advance for the operation. The operation has been a success and although I’m only at the start of the recovery process I’m already making good progress. When I next saw Mr O again at the fracture clinic he was so encouraging – I had been worried about the flexion and ROM in my new knee – but he was so reassuring – I left the clinic on cloud nine with hardly a limp! I don’t doubt that he’s a very skilled surgeon but I particularly appreciated his ability to connect and communicate with me as a patient. That’s also a valuable asset for any doctor . So, Mr Obakponovwe thank you to you and your team.

As this was my second hip replacement, I feel more than adequately qualified to comment on the ‘care’ provided by my surgeon, Mr Obakponovwe. My first experience, with a different surgeon, had not been plain sailing so, understandably, I was a little apprehensive about hip number two. However, Mr Obakponovwe’s positive attitude and cheerful willingness to listen to me, put me at my ease prior to surgery. In the days which followed, I could not get over the difference between the two operations…the recovery has been far speedier and less painful. Everything about my treatment has been exemplary. I am not sure what, if anything, could have been bettered. When you sign on the dotted line to allow someone to carry out major surgery on your body, it is important to feel that you still retain your rights as an individual and that you haven’t just morphed into a statistic. I really felt that I was seen as a person and not just another name on the afternoon surgery schedule. I appreciate that it is still early days as far as getting to ‘know’ my new hip is concerned, but judging by my current mobility I have every confidence that we will get on just fine. It is so important to me that I can maintain my agility and independence, so I feel I owe Mr Obakponovwe a huge (and relieved) vote of thanks.

I had an emergency full hip replacement following a fall. The surgeon was very friendly, polite & understanding before the operation, then I was delighted to see him again at my fracture clinic follow up. At 2 months post op & 76 years old I have now fully recovered from the surgery. I highly recommend this surgeon for his bedside manner & operational skills

Dr O, really saved my football career with surgery on my right hip. After a surgery went wrong by another surgeon I met Dr O and since my first assessment everything went so smoothly and my surgery was taken care of. if it wasn’t for him I still wouldn’t be playing now.
