Revision Hip and Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee replacement surgery is a highly successful procedure for relieving pain and improving function in the knee joint. However, in some cases, the original implant may wear out or become loose, necessitating a revision surgery.

What is Revision Knee Replacement Surgery?

Revision knee replacement surgery involves replacing part or all of your previous knee prosthesis with a new one. This may be necessary due to a variety of reasons as mentioned below.

Reasons why you may need a revision of the knee replacement:

This can happen if there is some issue with your knee replacement like:

  • Increased pain in the affected knee
  • Loosening of the implant
  • Worn out prosthesis
  • Infection in the prosthetic joint
  • Weakening of bone around the knee replacement, a process known as osteolysis (bone loss)
  • Fracture
  • Instability or a feeling of giving way while walking
  • Stiffness in the knee
  • Leg length discrepancy

What Happens During Revision Knee Replacement Surgery?

During revision knee replacement surgery, the surgeon will replace some or all of the parts of your old knee replacement. This is usually done in a hospital operating room while you are asleep under general anesthesia.hes.

How is the Surgery Performed?

Following steps are then taken:

  • Making an incision: The surgeon will make a cut over your knee to reach the joint.
  • Removing the old parts: The old parts of the knee replacement will be taken out.
  • Preparing the bone: The surgeon will shape the bone to fit the new parts. Sometimes, they may need to add bone grafts or metal wedges to make up for any missing bone.
  • Putting in the new parts: The surgeon will attach the new parts to the bone using special cement.
  • Reattaching muscles and tendons: The muscles and tendons around the knee will be reattached.
  • Closing the incision: The surgeon will close the cut with stitc
Risks and Complications (Revision Knee Surgery)

Revision knee replacement surgery is a serious operation, and like any surgery, there are potential risks and complications. Some of the possible complications include:

  • Stiffness in the knee
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Blood clots
  • Nerve or blood vessel injury
  • Prosthesis failure
  • Kneecap dislocation
  • Ligament injury

It’s important to talk to Mr Obakponovwe about the risks and benefits of revision knee replacement surgery before making a decision.

Post op care (Revision Knee Surgery)
  • CPM machine: This machine helps to gently move your knee joint, which can help to reduce stiffness and improve range of motion.
  • Physical therapy: Physical therapy is an important part of recovery. It will help you to regain strength and flexibility in your knee.
  • Knee immobiliser: This device helps to keep your knee stable while it heals.

What is Revision Hip Replacement Surgery?

Revision hip replacement is a complex surgical procedure in which all or part of a previously implanted hip-joint is replaced with a new artificial hip-joint. This is usually done when the original hip replacement has worn out or become loose.

Though, Total hip replacement surgery is an option to relieve severe arthritis pain that limits your daily activities. During total hip replacement, the damaged cartilage and bone is removed from the hip joint and replaced with artificial components. But at times, the hip replacement implants can wear out for various reasons and may need to be replaced with the help of a surgical procedure known as revision hip replacement surgery. This is usually done when the original hip replacement has failed.

Revision hip replacement surgery is a major surgery and should only be considered after careful discussion with Mr Obakponovwe.

What Happens During Revision Hip Replacement Surgery?

Revision hip replacement surgery is a complex procedure that is performed under general anesthesia. During the surgery, the surgeon will make an incision over your hip to expose the hip joint. Then, the femur will be dislocated from the acetabulum so that the old plastic liner and the metal socket can be removed.

After removal, the acetabulum (socket) will be prepared using extra bone and wire mesh to make up for the socket space and shape. Then, the new metal shell will be inserted into the socket using screws or special cement. A liner made of plastic, ceramic, or metal will be placed inside the metal socket.

The surgeon will then prepare the femur to receive the new femoral component. The old femoral component will be removed, and the femur will be shaped to fit the new component. The new femoral component will then be inserted into the femur using bone cement.

Once the new components are in place, the surgeon will test the range of motion of the hip joint. If everything looks good, the surgeon will close the incision.

Post-operative precautions (Revision Hip Surgery)

After hip replacement surgery, you’ll need to be careful to protect your new hip joint and help it heal properly. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Avoid certain movements: Be careful not to bend your hip too far or twist it too much, especially when you’re first recovering.
  • Keep your legs apart: When you’re lying in bed, try to keep your legs slightly apart to help prevent your hip from moving out of place.
  • Don’t cross your legs: Crossing your legs can put too much stress on your new hip joint.
  • Use a pillow: Place a pillow between your legs when you’re sleeping to help keep your hips in a good position.
  • Use a raised toilet seat: This will help you avoid bending too far when you sit down and stand up.
  • Ask for help: Don’t try to do too much too soon. Ask for help with things like getting dressed, bathing, and cooking.
Potential risks and complications (After Revision Hip Surgery)
  • Revision hip replacement surgery is a serious operation and, like any surgery, there are potential risks and complications. Some of the possible complications include:

    • Infection
    • Dislocation
    • Fracture of the femur or pelvis
    • Nerve or blood vessel injury
    • Blood clots
    • Leg length inequality
    • Hip prosthesis failure
    • Failure to relieve pain

Revision hip replacement is a surgery to replace a failed hip implant with a new one. This can help to improve the strength and flexibility of your hip, and make it easier to move around. It can also help to reduce pain in your hip.
